Kui won the flooring exercise on the 1996 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, becoming the primary Chinese woman to take action. Afanasyeva scored 15.066 on balance beam and 14.833 on flooring throughout qualifications on 29 July. At the European Championships in Moscow in April, she placed fifth in the all-round in qualifications with a rating of 55.099 but didn't advance to the ultimate as a result of the 2-per-country rule.
